Chaosynth: download the demo, purchase the pre-release version or hear samples

Chaosynth is a software synthesiser that can be used as a whole instrument or one layer with other SR modules.  It produces a unique and rich range of sound textures for use in your compositions.

The Chaosynth sound comes from a technique called granular synthesis driven by cellular automata.

Granular synthesis is the formation of a large sound or note from a succession of shorter sound grains.  The content of these sound grains is determined by cellular automata based on a frequency spectrum.

Cellular automata are a grid of cells that change their value over time.  The CA in Chaosynth evolve organic patterns that reflect themselves in the sound that Chaosynth produces.

For each sound granule the CA are used to pick a number of frequencies/pitches from a pre-defined set.  In this way, Chaosynth evolves its sound through a spectrum of pitches that you define.  There is support for standard tuning, harmonic tuning and specific custom tuning of the frequencies.

The frequencies for each granule are fed into a bank of oscillators.  These are the core sound generators of Chaosynth.  For each oscillator you can specify its waveform, volume and pulse width if applicable.  The output of each oscillator can then be fed straight to the final output or via filters for further processing.

The size of each granule is specified using a size envelope.  Small sizes give a fast bubbly or choppy sound, large sounds give a slow smooth sound.

The sound can be further processed by low pass, high pass, bass pass filters and ring modulators.

Many of Chaosynth's parameters can be modulated.  Sources of modulation include envelopes, LFO's and sample and holds.
